“They put him to death by hanging him on a tree.  Yet three days afterwards God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen to us the witnesses chosen by God” (Acts 10: 37ff).

 

Dear brothers and sister, these words of Peter which we heard in the first reading on this Easter Sunday formed the core part of the preaching of the Apostles as they proclaimed the message of the person of Christ, as the one who preached in Galilee, made his way to Jerusalem, put to death, only to have God raise him to life.

 

These words then became enshrined in the Creed which we profess each Sunday when we come to celebrate the Liturgy:  “He suffered, died and was buried and the third day he rose from the dead in fulfillment of the Scriptures.”  This is our faith as Christians, sustained and believed, affirmed and lived over these two thousand years.

 

Easter, the cornerstone of our faith, the resurrection of Christ, the center of our Christian life. Yes, the author of life whom evil men put to death has been raised, never to die again.

 

Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Mary, is not dead, he is alive!

Jesus Christ, the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, is not forgotten, he is seated at the right of the Father!

Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, is not a mere person of the past, he is here among us and he has promised to be with us until the end of time when he will come to judge the living and the dead!

 

My brothers and sisters, Easter is the source of our Christian hope, our Christian joy and of course our Christian confidence.

 

Easter tells us that not only is our God a God of the living, of life itself, but we human beings are destined for life and even more, the fullness of life.  In other words, for those of us united to Christ, we have ourselves received the power to overcome sin and darkness, evil and mistrust, death and despair. 

 

With these lofty expectation, St Paul tells us in the second reading, that we should let our thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth.

 

Yet, today, if we look throughout the world, we still seem to be looking down, and we see so many options for death and not life.  We see a disregard for human dignity.  We see injustice and poverty.  We see inequality and the lack of basic necessities for life.

 

We may say that we are not responsible for all these evils that threaten humanity.  However, we are responsible of how we think of them.  It would be truly tragic if our hearts were so hardened and indifferent that we did not show concern.  It would be truly tragic if we did not reform our own lives in line with the Lord who is reason, who taught us of the option for life, for respect, and deep concern for others.

 

No, we must look to what is above and rediscover our confidence in the power and dignity of the human person, the creativity of the human mind to resolve problems and seek the good of others and the goodness of the human heart.  Yes. Let us embrace the things above, the things of God, the things of the Risen Lord.

 

Pope Francis said this about Easter and its ultimate meaning: “Christ’s resurrection is not an event of the past; it contains a vital power which has permeated this world. Where all seems to be dead, signs of the resurrection suddenly spring up. It is an irresistible force. Often it seems that God does not exist: all around us we see persistent injustice, evil, indifference and cruelty. But it is also true that in the midst of darkness something new always springs to life and sooner or later produces fruit. On razed land life breaks through, stubbornly yet invincibly. However dark things are, goodness always re-emerges and spreads. Each day in our world beauty is born anew, it rises transformed through the storms of history. Values always tend to reappear under new guises, and human beings have arisen time after time from situations that seemed doomed. Such is the power of the resurrection, and all who evangelize are instruments of that power” (Evangeliigaudium, 276).

Yes, they put the author of life to death, only to have God raise him from the dead. 

“The Lord is risen. Alleluia.”

“He is truly risen.  Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.”
