Good Friday,April 3, 2015-Dili

Today, the Church in liturgical starkness and silence stands with Mary beneath the cross and fixes her eyes upon Christ, who hangs on a tree. 

There is deep simplicity in today’s liturgy, yes, because the Master has been crucified, the Messiah has suffered humiliation, and because, the Son of God, as Isaiah wrote, “has submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent.”

The Church today forgoes all that is usual, because something so unusual has happened.  An innocent man has been crucified, for the simple reason that he revealed the truth of God’s mercy by forgiving all, and he loved the outcast, the poor, the forgotten.  He protected the sinners and weak; he fed the hungry; he comforted the sorrowful.

Yes, today the Church is silent; we fast and we reflect.  She wants nothing to distract us from our gazing, our focus on the cross. She wants us to perceive in the depth of our hearts what has happened on this day.

What do we see as stand beneath the cross?  We see this man, who was like us in all things but sin, crucified.  Ancient historical sources tell us that crucifixion was a most horrible death, including the loss of blood, the breaking of bones, the inability to breathe.  Moreover, crucifixion signified being abandoned by God, isolation, and condemnation.  So we witness a true human horror, or as Isaiah says: “So marred was his look beyond that of man and his appearance beyond that of mortals.” We see Christ, our loving Lord, who has died.

Yes, my brothers and sisters, that is what we see with our human eyes.  But with the eyes of faith, we see much more, we see Christ who died for us.  Those two words “for us” explain and interpret this day.  Indeed, it is not the fact that Christ died that makes this day holy or good, but rather, it is the fact that he died for us. 

In other words, through the death of Christ, we became one with God again.  Whatever separated us from God, namely, sin, has been destroyed.  As we heard in the Second Reading:  “When perfected Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” Today, we are saved; today we are brought back to the love of God, today we are united with God once again.

Indeed, as we heard in the Passion narrative: when the soldiers pierced the side of Christ, “immediately blood and water flowed out.”  It was at that moment, Christ gave his divine life to us that we would receive through our baptism and maintained through the Eucharist.  It was at that moment that we became his people once again.  It was that moment that we became part of his family forever. 

On this day, the entire work and mission of our Savior were brought to its completion and perfection.  This was the very reason why the Father sent him into the world “to give his life for the salvation of all.”  From the cross, he draws the entire human race to himself so that not one of us would be loss, so that not one of use would be forgotten, so that not one of us would ever be abandoned.

That is why it is the cross which defines us as Christians; it is the symbol of our faith.  It is the source of our hope.  It has always given us hope, for by gazing on the cross we see absolute love, not an abstract idea, but concrete love for us, for Christ died for me, for us, for everyone.

Consider the countless people who through the centuries have gazed on the cross in time of difficulty and despair, only to find comfort and peace.

Consider those who are dying and are looking at the cross, knowing that God is with him as they pass from this life to the next.

Consider those soldiers who brought a cross with them in battle assured that God was protecting them and watching them.

Consider so many of us here today, who wear a cross on a very person, as a sign of who we are and as a means to profess our faith in the love that God has for us.

Consider us now, who in the starkness and darkness of this church are just looking on the cross, Yes, my brothers and sisters, behold the wood of the cross upon which was hung our savior, come let us adore.***
